What is Crystallography?
Crystallography is the science that examines the arrangement of the atoms in a solid.
The word "crystallography" derives from the Greek words crystallon- which means cold drop/freeze drop.

Crystallography is the study of atomic and molecular structures.
Crystallographers wants to know how the atoms in a material are arranged in order to understand the relationship between atomic structures and the properties of these materials. These crystallographers work in many disciplines, including chemistry, geology, biology, material science, metallurgy and physics.
They first started with the study of crystals, like quartz. Today we study the atomic architecture of any material that can form a solid. We also investigate other materials such as, amorphous thin films, liquid crystals, fibers, glasses, liquids, gases and quasi crystals.

1895, Wilhelm Rontgen discovered X-ray Crystallography. X-ray Crystallography is an experimental technique that exploits the fact that X-rays are diffracted by crystals. It has also led to a better understanding of chemical bonds and non-convalent interactions. X-ray Crystallography has also shown the arrangement of water molecules in ice, revealing hydrogen bonds, that holds solid together.
